A few points to remember if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a car breakdown

Breaking down on a Motorway

• if possible leave the motorway at the next exit
• If you have to stop on the motorway, drive onto the hard shoulder stopping as far to the left as possible with your front wheels turned inwards.
• Switch on your hazard lights
• Call for assistance using your mobile. If this is not possible then stop near an emergency phone - they are never more than 1/2 mile away, indicated by arrow posts showing the direction of the nearest on the hard shoulder.
• Make sure everyone leaves the vehicle by the nearside doors
• Stay on the bank or verge well back behind the barrier if it safe to do so
• if possible lock all doors with the exception of the front nearside passenger door - this will allow you to get safely back into the car in cases of emergency.
• Do not attempt any repairs to your vehicle even changing a wheel. Many people including recovery personnel have been killed by being struck whilst making repairs
• Do not cross the central reservation under any circumstances

General Roadside Breakdowns

• If you are forced to stop immediately pull well into the kerb or verge. If you can try and find a layby or quiet side road
• Switch on your hazard lights
• If you havent parked safely get any passengers to leave the vehicle preferably from the nearside as a precaution to being struck.
• if you have a warning triangle place it at least 100m behind the car as a warning to other vehicles.
• Call for assistance
• The driver should remain with the car as recovery teams cannot work on the vehicle if the driver is not present
• Accept help only from officials with the correct ID
