What is not covered under the policy
Mechanical breakdown insurance will not pay for routine servicing
of your car, nor will it pay for repairs needed as a result
of wear and tear on the car. You will also find that mechanical
breakdown insurance will not pay out for:
• Claims which exceed a certain limit
(e.g. the purchase price of your car)
• Claims which exceed the mileage limit given in the
policy
• Claims where you did not follow the claims procedure
properly (e.g. you had work carried out without getting the
insurer’s permission)
• Parts and labour costs which exceed the manufacturer’s
list price
• Parts usually covered by normal servicing
• Parts which are being recalled by the manufacturer
(e.g. because they have design faults)
• Replacement of glass, wheels and tyres, batteries,
bulbs, water ingress, exhaust systems and catalytic converters,
wiper blades, wheel balancing and alignment, and airbags
• Replacement of spark plugs, plug leads, points, oils,
filters and lubricants as a result of wear and tear
• Replacement of body components such as strikers and
hinges, or any component requiring adjustment or paintwork
• Replacement of radio cassettes and CD players, or
any component within the audio system
• Repairs, replacements or alterations to a car which
has been modified from the manufacturer’s original specification
• Damage caused by you or other people (this should
be covered by your car insurance)
• Damage which, in the view of a qualified engineer,
could have been avoided or which was caused by lack of maintenance
or by misuse (e.g. damage to the clutch or gearbox)
• Renewal of any brake components due to incorrect adjustment,
misuse or wear and tear
• Cleaning of fuel lines, filters, carburettors and
pumps
• Recharging of the air-conditioning system
• Components which fail due to wear and tear caused
by the vehicle’s age or mileage
You may also find that there is a ‘betterment’
clause in the policy which means that your claim will be reduced
if, in the insurer’s view, a repair has increased the
value of the car with the result that you are better off than
before the repair took place.
